Appliance Installation Tips: What to Know Before You Start

Appliance installation looks simple in the YouTube videos. In practice, it's where a lot of homeowners run into expensive surprises. Here's what to know before you start — whether you're tackling it yourself or deciding to call a pro.

Measure Twice, Order Once

The most common appliance installation mistake is ordering before measuring. Dishwashers, refrigerators, and over-the-range microwaves all have specific clearance requirements. Measure the opening width, height, and depth — then check the appliance specs, not just the box dimensions. A dishwasher that's a quarter inch too tall won't slide under the counter. A microwave that's too deep will block cabinet doors.

Know Your Connections

Before the appliance arrives, know what connections you have. Dishwashers need a hot water supply line, a drain line, and a 120V electrical connection (or hardwire, depending on the model). Dryers need either a 240V outlet (electric) or a gas line with a flexible connector (gas). Over-the-range microwaves need a dedicated 120V circuit and may need ductwork for venting. If the connections aren't already in place, factor that into your project scope.

The Dishwasher Drain Loop

This one trips up a lot of DIYers. The dishwasher drain hose must loop up to the underside of the counter before connecting to the drain — this is called a high loop, and it prevents dirty water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. Skip this step and you'll have foul-smelling standing water in your dishwasher within weeks. Some local codes require an air gap fitting instead of a high loop — check with your municipality.

Gas Appliances: Don't Guess

If you're installing a gas dryer or range, use a new flexible gas connector — never reuse an old one. Apply gas-rated pipe thread sealant (not Teflon tape) to all threaded connections. After connecting, test every joint with soapy water and watch for bubbles. If you smell gas at any point, shut off the supply and call a pro. Gas leaks are not a DIY learning experience.

When to Just Call Someone

Call a handyman when: the existing connections aren't in the right place, the installation requires new electrical or plumbing work, the appliance is heavy and awkward (over-the-range microwaves are notorious), or you're not confident in gas connections. The cost of a professional installation is almost always less than the cost of fixing a DIY mistake.
