Patching a hole in drywall is the easy part. The hard part — the part that separates a professional repair from a DIY eyesore — is matching the existing texture. Here's how to tackle the three most common textures found in Red Oak homes.
Before you touch a spray can, figure out what you're matching. Orange peel looks like the skin of an orange — small, uniform bumps. Knockdown has larger, flattened splatters with flat areas between them. Smooth is exactly that — no texture at all, just flat paint. Hold a flashlight at a low angle to the wall to see the texture clearly.
Orange peel is the most forgiving to match. After your patch is dry and primed, use a can of orange peel texture spray (available at any hardware store). Hold the can 18–24 inches from the wall and apply in a sweeping motion. The key is to feather the edges — spray a wider area than the patch so the new texture blends into the old. Let it dry completely before painting.
Knockdown requires a bit more skill. Mix joint compound to a thick but pourable consistency (like pancake batter). Apply it to the patched area with a roller or by flicking it with a brush. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it starts to lose its sheen, then lightly drag a drywall knife across the surface to flatten the peaks. The timing is everything — too wet and it smears, too dry and it tears.
Smooth walls are actually the hardest to match because any imperfection shows. Apply joint compound in thin coats, feathering the edges wide. Sand between coats with 120-grit, then 220-grit. Prime the patch before painting — unprimed compound absorbs paint differently and will show as a dull spot even after multiple coats.
Even a perfect texture match can look wrong if you spot-paint. Always paint the entire wall from corner to corner, not just the patch. Sheen matters too — flat paint hides imperfections better than eggshell or satin. If your walls are eggshell, prime the patch with flat primer before applying the finish coat.
