How to Fix a Sticking Door in Red Oak, TX

If you live in Red Oak or anywhere in Ellis County, you know how brutal Texas summers can be. That heat and humidity does a number on wood doors — they swell, warp, and start sticking in their frames. The good news: most sticking doors are fixable without replacing the whole unit.

Why Doors Stick in Texas

Wood expands when it absorbs moisture. During humid Texas summers, door frames and door slabs both swell — but not always at the same rate. The result is a door that drags along the top, bottom, or side of the frame. In some cases, the house itself has shifted slightly, throwing the frame out of square. Both problems show up as a sticking door, but the fix is different.

Step 1: Find Where It's Sticking

Close the door slowly and watch where it makes contact. Common spots: the top corner on the latch side, the bottom edge, or along the entire latch side. Run a piece of cardboard around the perimeter — where it catches is where you need to work. Mark the contact points with a pencil.

Step 2: Check the Hinges First

Loose hinges are the most common cause of a sticking door — and the easiest fix. Open the door and check every hinge screw. If any spin freely, the screw hole is stripped. Remove the screw, stuff the hole with wooden toothpicks and wood glue, let it dry, then re-drive the screw. This alone fixes about half of all sticking doors.

Step 3: Plane or Sand the Sticking Edge

If the hinges are tight and the door still sticks, you need to remove material from the contact point. For minor sticking, 80-grit sandpaper on a sanding block works fine. For more significant contact, a hand plane or belt sander is faster. Remove a little at a time, test the door, and repeat. Always seal or paint the raw wood afterward — bare wood will absorb moisture and swell right back.

Step 4: Check the Frame for Square

If the door sticks along the entire latch side, the frame may be out of square — a sign of foundation movement or settling. Hold a level against the hinge jamb. If it's more than 1/4 inch out of plumb, you're dealing with a structural issue. Planing the door will help temporarily, but the real fix is addressing the frame or foundation.
