When and How to Replace Bathroom Caulk

Bathroom caulk doesn't last forever. When it starts to crack, peel, or turn black with mold, it's no longer doing its job — and water is getting behind your tile or tub surround. Here's how to replace it cleanly.

Signs It's Time to Replace

Black mold that won't scrub off. Caulk that's pulling away from the tile or tub. Cracks or gaps in the bead. Caulk that's yellowed or hardened. Any of these mean water is getting through. Don't wait — water behind tile causes mold in the wall, damaged drywall, and eventually structural damage.

Use the Right Caulk

For bathrooms, use 100% silicone caulk or a siliconized latex caulk labeled for kitchens and baths. It must be mold-resistant. Pure silicone is the most durable and waterproof option but is harder to apply and can't be painted. Siliconized latex is easier to work with and paintable. Never use standard latex caulk in a wet area — it will fail within months.

Step 1: Remove All the Old Caulk

This is the most important step. New caulk over old caulk fails quickly. Use a caulk removal tool or utility knife to cut and peel away every bit of old caulk. A caulk softener product makes this much easier for silicone. Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution to kill any mold spores. Let it dry completely — at least 24 hours in a humid bathroom.

Step 2: Apply the New Bead

Tape both sides of the joint with painter's tape for a clean line. Cut the caulk tube tip small — a 1/8-inch opening is right for most tub and tile joints. Apply in one smooth, continuous pass. Tool the bead immediately with a wet finger or caulk tool. Remove the tape while the caulk is still wet, pulling it away at a 45-degree angle.

Step 3: Cure Time

Don't use the shower or tub for at least 24 hours after caulking — longer in humid conditions. Silicone needs air exposure to cure, so keep the bathroom ventilated. Full cure takes 48–72 hours.
